Are You Dealing With Heel Pain?

Heel pain can have several different causes. Some of them, such as ill-fitting shoes, long walks, or standing for long periods, are easily remedied. In other cases, heel pain can be caused by an underlying cause that may need diagnosis and treatment from a proper podiatrist. Dr. Brian Hochman and Dr. Van Dao Hochman are board-certified podiatrists at Crystal Falls Foot + Ankle Specialists in Leander, TX. They specialize in all types of heel pain.

Causes of Heel Pain

If you live in Leander and you are experiencing any of these symptoms, its time to call Dr. Hochman.

  • Plantar Fasciitis: This is one of the most common forms of heel pain. It is caused by overstretching of the plantar fascia, the band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes. Symptoms include shooting pains inside the heel, pain after resting or activity, and burning or tingling in and around the heel.
  • Heel Spurs: A heel spur is a bone growth that occurs where your heel bone and plantar fascia join. It can be caused by strain on the muscles and ligaments around your heel. Symptoms include sharp pain in the heel when standing upon waking, a dull ache in the heel throughout the day, and swelling/inflammation at the front of the heel.
  • Heel Bursitis: The bursa is a fluid-filled sac located behind the heel bone. The strain on your ankle can cause it to swell and become inflamed. Symptoms include swelling behind the heel, calf pain when walking, and stiffness in the ankle/heel.
  • Achilles Tendonitis: The Achilles tendon is the strip of muscle that connects the heel bone to the calf. Symptoms include pain in the heel and lower calf and stiffness in the morning that gradually improves throughout the day.
